People make friends with other people when they spend casual time together.
This is why it's very easy to form friendships in school and university. You share similar activities but more importantly similar schedule. Overlapping and fluctuating social circus form is naturally giving you regular face-time and share of experiences with many different people. Proximity can be more important that similar interests. One study found that in student dormitories distance between rooms was the strongest friendship predictor. Being physically present in a class a lot without saying a word makes other more sympathetic to you.
Why we don't have enough friends? The main reason for the lack of friendships is the simple fact that most people don't prioritise friendships. The average British teenager spends more time on TikTok than socialising at parties, events or on the phone with friends combined.
Another thing that makes many people vulnerable is the way friendship networks are structured. Rather than being densely interconnected, friend networks are often build around central hubs. So if central people disappear from your life this may deprive you of many connections at once.
