Missing Diphthongs

 

Disappearing Diphthongs ❗️

The twentieth century RP featured four centring diphthongs, /ɪə/, /eə/, /ɔə/ and /ʊə/.

But the speakers have dropped /ɔə/ completely and  increasingly replacing the others with long monophthongs, [ɪː], [ɛː], [ɵː], [oː].

Vowel Shift

 

Have you noticed that the phonetic symbols commonly used to represent British English do not always correspond closely to contemporary Received Pronunciation (RP)? 

For instance, the vowel in the DRESS set is now typically pronounced closer to [ɛ] than to [e], while the vowel in the TRAP set is more accurately [a] rather than the traditional [æ]. 

These changes reflect an ongoing counter‑clockwise vowel shift in English.
